An Embarrassing Habit

Has your baby develop any habits that are unique to them? A specific habit that they used to soothe and calm themselves right before they fall asleep? A specific habit that sometimes can be distasteful, weird or embarrassing?

I noticed that Ryan has developed this distasteful habit of biting and chewing the string of his bolster every time he wants to sleep. He will happily chew away as he dozed off. I am not sure when the habit starts but I don’t think it’s going away soon. Every time, we pulled it out from him, he will show his displeasure. So, in order to make sure that it is at least hygienic, we have got the maid to change the bolster cover everyday. In fact, he has developed a liking to clutch his bolster tightly, covers his face and chews the string to sleep. (aiyoh..slap head, what an ugly sight especially in public).

But surprisingly, I understand that most babies will develop some form of a unique habit that they will naturally carry on into their adult life. My youngest sister has this habit of smelling the string of her bolster to sleep. (I think she still does that!). My wife needs her extra big pillow to cover her head. (She has even given the pillow an affectionate name - `chow chow’ which means smelly in Cantonese). My habit is even more embarrassing! My mother told me that I have a tendency to clutch and squeeze the corners of my pillows to sleep when I was young. And I know she is telling the truth because I still do that unconsciously when I want to doze off. (Now you know my dark side).

I just hope that Ryan’s habit of chewing will stop and he will pick up a lesser `yucky’ habit when he grows older.

Do you have a unique habit to share?

Yeah, every baby sure need something with them to comfort and soothe them, it is very true...

I gave my boy nappy cloth since 3 months old and he still need it till today. I wash and change it everyday of cause. That nappy cloth could be his comforter when he cry and he hug that to sleep too. Not forget he also chew the corner of the cloth...once he did chew the bolster string but soon he change to chew the cloth...

Don't you think it is nice, I still hugging my smelly comfy pillow..

Don't be embarasse over the habit. It is not something really bad. I couldn't be survive if I don't have the bolster and nappy cloth for my boy during the 1 month hospital stay. It does wonder to calm them entirely.

Oh dont worry daddy, why Ryan is biting those its because he is teething. Thats what happened to my little boy too, he grabs and bites the tip of anything from blankets, pillows and even my tee..

It's a phase he will soon pass it. My girl likes to suck and bite her clothes and end up my MIL tied a hanky on her hand for her soothing and keep change it when it wet.

I think Ryan did that because of teething??

Haha. He puts everything into his mouth nowadays and the paed said that it is perfectly normal for his age. Teething should be anytime from now to 8 months. But he particularly like the bolster string and his bolster. So funny to hear different habits from mommies here. If we are to compile it, I guess we could actually come out with a book. haha

Mine likes to chew on his cloth diaper. Every baby needs it for self-soothing. As for myself, I like to touch the edges of cotton sheets/clothe kekke

Hehe I used to have a "bantal busuk" from when I was still a baby (my mom said it full of my smell. Whoahahaha). But have thrown it coz it's koyak already. Since then I just like to hug something to sleep.

Lynn likes to suck her thumb to sleep. It's so difficult for her get rid of this bad habit. As for Hao, once he has satisfied his 'sucking' urge before sleeping, he can go to sleep without sucking anything. He does not need bolster also.

i was waiting for my girls do develop special habits in order to go to sleep. but my 2 yo only need a pacifier to go to sleep. my baby sometimes doze off without pacifier. my hubby and i doesn't have any particular habit. i guess it is more practical when we go travelling, especially with airasia 15kg policy. i don't need to carry extra busuk pillow.
