Milestone - He has earned his place at the dinner table

baby,babynme,Chicco highback chair,parenting 12 November 2008 at 7:30pm

Ryan has achieved another milestone as far as we are concerned. For the first time, he has earned his rightful place around the dining table. He was given a Chicco Highback chair as a gift from one of his mommy's colleague. But the instructions said 6 months and above. So, the chair has been in the unopened box waiting to do it's duty.

Dinner time with Ryan has always been a juggling act. I am not talking about the food. It is Ryan that we are juggling because he wanted to be carried and would not want to sit still. So, we will take turn to carry and `entertain' him while the rest eat. Since my younger sister is staying with us till her own apartment is ready by year-end, we will take turns to be his jester. Needless to say, dinner is almost always a hurried affair.

With him at 5 months now, we have decided to try training him to sit (hopefully in a civilised manner) by the dinner table while we have a decent meal. So we brought out the chair, fixed it up and gave him a try a couple of days ago. He really do not have much patience with it though.

We did the same thing last night but to keep him entertained, I gave him his bolster. And surprise, surprise. We had our 25 uninterrupted minutes of a decent dinner (amidst giving him some occasional attention and encouragement). He was busy playing with his bolster, cooing and talking to himself. And he certainly looks good sitting on that cool Chicco highback.

We would not have bought it because our check with the stores showed a hefty price tag of close to RM700! Unlike a car seat where safety is a great deciding factor, a dining chair is a dining chair to us. Like I said earlier, this little fella is lucky to have many uncles and aunties who are more than willing to shower him with gifts. (And the parents aren't going to complain..hehe)

It is good to learn to sit while dining. But once he can climb over and all around I think dine on the floor is the best.

My boy not using high chair at home for safety reason till today and he got no problem when eat out sitting on high chair.

My monster does not sit still too and yes, I would never have forked out Rm700 for a dining chair ... to bad he does not have loaded uncle and aunts - hahahah.

We have so much similarities with our baby. My baby YL always wanted to be held and doesnt sit still, his butt is always on fire.

Easily gets bored with his toys and need to constantly give him another toy just to make himself occupied.

But good to learn that baby Ryan is learning how to sit now..

What a lucky baby...being pampered with expensive high chair. I haven't got one for Daniel yet.

Anyway, it's good that he can sit quietly in his high chair (Maybe because of his bolster?)

Hi ladies. Thanks for all the comments. Well, still keeping our fingers crossed that he will sit still for long. Got to train him. Otherwise, not going to be able to enjoy our meals. And yes, the bolster does help. We'll see whether we could remove that later. I wouldn't have buy it. Instead, I would probably buy one of those foldable ones that my newphews and nieces used to have. But we are grateful to the friend who got this for Ryan. So sweet and generous of him. It's a Friday today. Hope that all of you would have a fabulous Friday and a great weekend ahead!

Dont worry, soon he will be busy playing with food. That would be another milestone for him and you as parent. hahaha! But it is always fun and satisfying to see your son growing up and becoming a young toddler.

I think that the high chair is important start for them to get used to dining with us. We also let Evan sit with us even before he could eat with us. And getting a safe high chair is a must. My neice almost fell off the high chair because she wasn't strapped in properly.

i am waiting for the day shan rae can do d same! shan rae is 7 mths now, and just started to sit on his own. so, we hope he can join us at the dining table sitting on his own baby sit, and not our laps! *haha*

Haha. True. Before too long, he will be preoccupied with playing with his food. I totally agreed with the safety aspect. Ryan is securely strapped in when he is in the chair because he tends to wriggle a fair bit in it. Well. 2ma, I'm sure the time will come soon. Ryan is only 5 months and he still really can't sit on his own without support. The chair is good because it has a high back. So, we just strapped him in just like a car seat..Haha
